I've applied for jobs at companies where people already knew me. However, this did not really change the interview process. The interviews still consisted of hours of white board problems.

If the interviews are all positive and it gets down to a hiring decision then the person you know might be helpful. But if you forgot how to do depth first tree traversal on one of the whiteboard interviews, knowing someone doesn't help.
