My "first take" on this is that Joe Biden is still President. Trump has no authority until Jan 20, 2025. So Musk is not getting anyone fired.

My "second take", which Musk has not figured out, is that the US government is not like a company. Every dollar in the Federal budget has a constituency. Cutting funding runs right into that constituency which will resist the cuts.

My personal favorite for government savings is getting rid of the electric vehicle subsidy.

Trump and Musk are nothing but a clown show. Musk's companies have survived because of government subsidies for electric vehicles and for space launches. "FCC Reaffirms Decision to Reject Starlink Application for Nearly $900 Million in Subsidies | Federal Communications Commission." Any subsidies for StarLink should be cut (funding for Starlink in Ukraine are not subsidies).
