Trump made one of the greatest gambles in history: win the presidential election or go to prison, possibly for the rest of his life. This was his motivation and this should not be forgotten. Trump won the bet and he is now unlikely to ever see the inside of a prison cell.

He made huge bets on flashy business like casinos and airlines which ended in bankruptcy. If he had put the money he inherited into an S&P index fund he would have been richer than he us now.

As a loser and someone who has always felt rejected he can speak to his supporters who feel that they have not gotten the rewards they should have. This is what allowed Trump to win the gamble and stay out of prison.
